Shawn McNulty-Kowal
in 2022, I learned how to throw on the wheel at the Palos Verdes Art Center in Ranchos Palos Verdes, California. About a year later, I moved back home to New Jersey to be closer to family. Back on the east coast, I bought my first Soldner kickwheel.
I drove two hours to pick it up from a family of potters. They were moving to Florida and had to get rid of stuff so they gave me a good price for it. The mother, who the kickwheel originally belonged to, asked me to take good care of it. Since then, I've thrown on it every single day.
I now work in my local studio as a technician and pottery teacher. There, I use our electric kiln and participate in local gas and wood firings.
I got the name On Stone, a stone from a Polish folk song—
Stone upon stone,
on stone, a stone,
and on that stone,
another stone.
